About our Prep School
At Gosfield School we believe pupils thrive in a happy environment in which they feel challenged and secure. We want our pupils to develop a love of learning that will stay with them throughout their lives. The Prep School caters for pupils from the Early Years Foundation Stage to Year 6 and is located at Meadow Court, a purpose-built school set in extensive woodland. Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom, with dedicated Forest School lessons and extensive extra-curricular activities. A strong focus on English and Maths is supported by subject specialist teaching for Science, Spanish, Computing, Food Technology, PE, Music and Performing Arts.
Teaching in the Prep School includes an hour of English and Maths every day. Maths is taught using a maths toolkit that has been carefully developed by experts for the new primary maths curriculum. The robust structure of Abacus Maths aims to produce confident young mathematicians who enjoy learning and make constant progress. English is taught using the Read, Write Inc programme developed by leading expert Ruth Miskin.
Subjects such as Geography, History, Religious Education, Science, ICT and Art are taught using a topic-based scheme which enriches learning and meets the needs of our pupils and fulfils government requirements. Whilst making learning an exciting, adventure packed process for our children, we will never lose sight of the fact that the firm foundation of literacy and numerical skills must be constantly strengthened and reinforced.
All pupils from Early Years to Year 6 have a timetabled Forest School lesson every week. Utilising our 110 acres of parkland, and building on the philosophy of Forest Schools, we hope to encourage and inspire pupils through outdoor learning.
With an emphasis on teaching and learning, and with expectations for all pupils to make excellent academic progress, pupils are assessed at the beginning of each academic year using computer based tests. Further assessments are taken every half term in English (phonics for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) and Maths. This allows us to track and monitor the progress of every pupil, and feed back to you, as parents, the progress they are making.
The partnership between parents and school is essential: it is important that you are aware what is being studied by your child and what you can do to support your child’s learning. We will keep you informed about your child’s progress through individual diaries or planners. We pride ourselves on our excellent pastoral care. We will do our best to ensure that your child is happy at school – if children are happy, they will learn and make progress.
