Gosfield students set record at the Gadget Show

Monday, 12 April 2010

Students from Gosfield School were invited to the Gadget Show at the NEC in Birmingham to pit their wits against engineering students and professional engineers from around the country, including The Royal Air Force and Loughborough University. Their mission was to build a gravity racing cart on the Gravity Cart Racing stand at the show.

Using materials supplied by Gravity Cart Racing, the Gosfield team of students, Ethan Gilbert and Dan Whenman, and teachers, Phil Davies and Mark Sirkett, completed the task in 62 minutes and 20 seconds which, at the time of completion, was a record time.  David Ackroyd, Managing Director of Gravity Cart Racing, said, “The students from Gosfield set a benchmark time and we were very impressed with the standard of their engineering. Considering that they were up against university and college students, as well as professional engineers, the Gosfield students responded fantastically well.”

Teacher, Phil Davies, added, “This was a great experience for our pupils, who thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. Inspired by the experience, we are hoping to enter our cart into events in the area.”

The cart built by the Gosfield students is based on a design for a cart that currently holds the land speed record for gravity carting.
