Chinese New Year School Curriculum Day

Tuesday, 19 January 2010

Curwen Print StudiosOn 27th January, Year 7 had a day of Chinese New Year related activities, these included making Chinese Prawn Crackers, Dumplings, Dough Plates (to wrap up the dumplings), Paper Cuttings and writing Chinese symbols. Our special guest for the day was a lady called Aimin Hill, she had married and come to live in Britain.

She arrived at 9.30 a.m. We met in the food room and moved on to our first activity which was Prawn Crackers. These were made by filling a pan half way with olive oil and then heating it up, next you simply take a single Prawn Cracker and drop it in the hot pan of oil. Almost immediately they expand and fly up to the surface. Carefully take them out and place them on a plate. After 30 seconds they should be ready to pick up and eat. Cooking the dumplings was hard work and consisted of mixing the flour and water. The pastry that was going to be the wrapping of the dumpling had to be made into a ball then rolled into a medium sized circle. Also the filling had to be made. There was a vegetarian, using Ginger, carrots and spring onions or meat filling which was the same but with pork added. Then the filling was wrapped in the pastry. After they were cooked, both of the dumplings tasted really nice. Yum Yum!

Curwen Print StudiosThe next part of our day was spent in the Art Room, moving on to paper cuts. When you cut paper you can make any kind of patterns such as frogs, stars and shapes. It was simple, to make them you fold a piece of paper into a square then fold again and then on the folded side cut out a shape or pattern then open it up and there was a delicate paper cut. We had great fun making the paper cuts and gradually moving one step higher.

Our final activity was learning some basic Chinese symbols. It was really very interesting finding out what your name actually meant! We learnt how Curwen Print Studiosto write our own name in Chinese as well as Mum, Dad, older sister, younger sister and brother. After this we gave our best wishes to Aimin Hill as she left. Overall, I would rate the day nine out of ten! It was an amazing day, Thank you Mrs Hill!
